For the past two days it's been sweltering in my apartment. I don't get the whole "We're in North California so we don't need air conditioning" thing. It's been in the mid 80's. The mid freaking 80's. This may make me sound like a wuss, but let me remind you, I've got servers in my living room. While it's only 85 outside, it stays well in the 90's in my apartment until the middle of the night when things finally start to cool off.
I think I'm going to buy one of those window unit air conditioner units. I live on the second story, and I've never installed one of these things before. I can already play this disaster out in my head. I'm going to try to put it in the window, and it's going to fall two stories to meet its demise on the asphalt. This will not be good times. I'm willing to admit that I'm a fairly clumsy person. I have my moments of grace, but they are few and far between. Installing a window AC unit will not be graceful, I can assure you.
Until I get around to doing this, some of the servers are getting powered off. Both incubus and trollop have already been shut down. I thought about shutting down succubus, but that's my NAT server. I *could* let our SMC cable modem do the NAT for us, but that just seems so... unprofessional. Lame. Pedestrian? Whatever. All of my servers act as great heaters in the winter (P4 supermicros) , but this isn't so convenient for summer time. Mother nature, hello? April is not summer. Make the heat go away.
For those of you that have shells on incubus/succubus, you probably won't be able to access them until I get this AC unit installed, which won't be until the end of May. I've got too many expenses before then (BSDCan, Baycon, Dell XPS). I have to go furniture shopping in a couple of months when Igor moves out. All I own is a computer desk and a bed. I don't have any idea where I'm supposed to buy furniture around here. I am not buying it from Ikea. I wish the west coast had Rooms To Go. They may have had furniture that I'd label as throwaway, but it's better than Ikea and they had a neat delivery service. Any suggestions for good furniture stores in the south bay that deliver?

If you're worried about a window AC unit falling, you might want to consider a portable AC instead. They tend to be a bit more expensive, but they just sit on the floor and have a hot air hose, similar to a clothes dryer, which you can run out a window. They can also be useful if you have non-standard windows.
Do they work as well as a normal window AC unit? I've got standard windows, so window AC wouldn't be a problem. I'm just trying to find something that can cool a tiny 1 bedroom apartment that has loads of computers in it.
Those portable units are junk. The one I had came with a metal hose, the hose got so hot, it canceled out the air conditioning effect. Get a window unit, a BIG window unit.
Low humidity. Get the windows open and maybe some fans.
I have a fan in the closet but over the weekend I got decent enough cooling and airflow just having the windows open.

All the windows were open. We even had a fan in one of them to push the air through the apartment better. It didn't help as much as you'd think.
Have someone like Sears install it for you. They can also help you figure out what size you'd need but get a second opinion so they don't try to sell you to large of a unit. xoxo
**** miss the sound of your voice***
Your best option is to buy a portable window AC unit. The window units are a pain in the ass to install and also to remove in the winter time when you don't need them. I have a portable air conditioning unit that I use in my room and it works great. When it starts getting cold I can just put it away out of sight until summertime rolls in. It really just depends on your preference. Either way I would suggest going to Frys to purchase them, they seem to have more of a selection for the best price.
The portable AC units vary in quality. We had one that had a reservoir that collected water. When the reservoir filled it had to be emptied or it would shut off, which was about every 5 hours. The second unit worked great, but it was about $700.
Out here in South Bay/L.A. it's only unbearable in July. I just point a fan right at my bed and I'm okay.
pcbsdbabe? hahahahahaha
(see what you have done, ms. harper? oh & we miss you on the relay chat.)
Well if you buy the unit and it comes with basic install instructions I'll help lug the thing up the stairs (I may need a moderate amount of Igor's help) and help get it in the window.
Maikeru, who are you?
oooh, scary stalker alert :P
PS: hey jojo! LTNT!
Tubez! Hi sweetie :) On my infrequent visits to hackphreak, I've tried to msg you but guess our times are to different. Hope your doing well.
Randi is now at least on the same coast as I am so I'm a happy Mom. Take care Jo
This being my 3rd summer in the bay area, I've actually found the portable AC units to be quite effective for one room or so if installed properly. Mine came with a plastic hose and attachment and I've found that it doesn't seem to leak too much heat and can cool the room off if the little water tank doesn't fill up or it doesn't trip the circuit breaker (it is after all sharing power with servers under my bed) I would suggest handling this sooner than later though, because sometime in these next two months in the South Bay (I'm also in Sunnyvale actually) we'll have two or so weeks (hopefully not too much more) of unbearable heat. When I first moved here, I waited 30 minutes during one of said weeks at Fry's in a line to get to the Air Conditioner selection only to find the line suddenly disassemble when they ran out of units. The price of the units was of course severely jacked up and I ended up having someone from out of state purchase and ship me a unit which actually ended up being cheaper overall.
u do know that servers normally are located in rooms designed for that? your glasses look cute :)
but playing gta is not cute!
by part 1 did you ment gta 3 liberty city or gta from 1997? cause you don't seem to me like someone who is a lifetime nerd, except for the glasses, and yet you are part of the freebsd project :P
