Site Problems

| | Comments (1) | TrackBacks (0)

Because of the high levels of comment spam, I moved over to a moderation system when I switched to Movable Type. Unless your email address is on a whitelist, I get sent an email when someone comments telling me I need to approve it.

For the last few days, I've only had a few emails, but quite a few comments. I'm not sure what's up with that, and I haven't yet had much of a chance to look into it. I just went through and published all of the new comments. I'm not trying to lock y'all out, I just didn't notice this until now. Until I get the problem fixed, new comments may take an hour or two to post if I'm not paying attention.

Happy Halloween!

I posted an entry on December 15th, 2003 about br1an (now known as elad) joining the military. As of yesterday, his service is finally over, and he can hopefully put even more time towards making NetBSD not suck. Congrats, elad!

NYCBSDCon Recap

I'm stuck in the Newark airport, since I missed the check-in for my flight by 5 minutes. Since I'm stuck here for another 2 hours until the next flight back to Austin, I've got nothing better to do than blog about my weekend. So here goes.

Friday:

My flight didn't get in until 10:30 PM, and I was still feeling pretty run down since I was ill, so that night was fairly low key. I went to some...Chinese? Mongolian?... restaurant with fearnor, asr, blll, winter, and uid0. Less than an hour later, dho, seisan, and poxy showed up, which was a good thing since I was getting pretty bored. All the NYNOG people are cool and all, but I can't hang when they are talking about networking stuff. I didn't have much to contribute to the conversation, so I ended up IRCing from my phone until everyone else came. After that, we had our own little "coders corner" at the end of the table.

It started getting late, and since the NYNOG people wanted to head up and do karaoke, dho and I went to crash at seisan & poxy's place. Unfortunately, we missed our train, so it took us bloody forever to get there. I think we finally ended up getting to sleep around some absurd hour like 5 AM. I've been told I fell asleep on dho's shoulder on the train. I do not remember this.

Highlight of the evening: Some drunk guy named Mike that was dressed up in what appeared to be toilet paper. I think he was supposed to be a mummy. He bought a pretzel off a sidewalk vendor, dropped it on the ground in a puddle, picked it up, and started eating it again. seisan called him on it. It was gross. He ended up on the same train as us. Listening to him and his friends was funny, or maybe we were just delirious from lack of sleep.

Saturday:

dho and I managed to struggle out of bed around 10 AM I think. Seisan was still out of it, so we called a cab, hopped a train, and made our way towards the conference. fearnor picked us up once we made it to the city, and we spent a while driving around Harlem trying to figure out wtf to go. Columbia University is like an oasis in the middle of the ghetto. It wasn't too horrible though - it just kinda reminded me of Atlanta.

When we got to the conference, I found out my registration hadn't been paid for (Thanks, Mike!), so I had to take care of that. The guys putting on NYCBSDCon told me that they had hella hits from my site. I'm rather curious as to how many people signed up after hearing about the conference here, though.

Alfred Perlstein (my spellchecker wanted to turn that into "Perl Stain" - heh) had an impromptu talk, "Captchas are LOL". That was awesome. Go zb.

I worked the FreeBSD booth for a while, which was kinda fun. I sold stuff, and the FreeBSD Foundation made money. Go donate to the project. No, really. Like, if all my readers donated $5, that would be cool. Do it now. Maybe then they can get a website that doesn't suck. Next year: a kissing booth. <3

I got to see a lot of friends that I hadn't seen in ages, and I recognized a lot of the people I met at BSDCan. Dan Langille was there, as well as Dru Lavigne - my two favorite Canadians.

After the conference, we all went to some local bar. Free food, decent music, and I got to hole up in a corner with a bunch of other BSD geeks dissecting FreeBSD on my MacBook Pro. It was awesome finally having someone else taking a look at what was going on. It kept quite a few people busy most of the night. It looks like I'm finally managing to drudge up some interest in this from other people. I don't remember exactly who I talked to, so if you're one of the cool people that sat there going through kernel code on my laptop all night, drop me a line.

asr was kind enough to let dho and I crash at his place that night. He has the thinkgeek /dev/blankie as well, and his is newer so it's much softer than mine. I am very jealous.

Highlight of the day: Jason Dixon's talk "BSD is Dying". By far the best presentation I have ever seen at any conference. 200+ slides in 20 minutes. But Jason, fuck you for that diss on Yahoo! :) REPRUHZENT.

Sunday:

asr decided to hit up the conference with us, so we got there probably around noon-ish. As Dan has figured out (and called me on, repeatedly), I can't get up on time for conferences. I'm lucky if I roll in by noon. Who the hell schedules a talk for 8 AM? wtf? We are not morning people. Adjust your conference schedules accordingly.

The only talk I managed to make it to that day was Murray Stokely's "Challenges that we face at Google". Murray is a cool guy and all, but I just wasn't in the mood for another "LOL DRINK THE GOOGLE KOOLAID" talk. Maybe I'm just feeling negative because they are teh enemy now. Yahoo! 4 Lyf. Speaking of, I got a bunch of shit from the Google booth. I walked in wearing my Yahoo! shirt with my Google hoodie. It's a war of search engines on my chest! Score.

RLoxley rolled down to see me, and I hadn't seen him in at least 6 years, so that was a trip. He still looks old. ;)

dho won Dru's book BSD Hacks during the closing ceremony raffle, but since he had 5 copies already (although by the end of the night, it had grown to 10...then 15 copies), he gave it to me. I got Dru to sign it for me. Very cool. I've been browsing through it, and it's got some good stuff in it. I'd recommend picking up a copy if you don't already have it. Even for the experienced BSD administrator, I guarantee you'll find something you didn't know about before.

fearnor, seisan, and poxy met asr, dho, and I at the end of the conference, and we went to some pizza place to get dinner. It was crappy pizza. I was not impressed. Where's this famous NY pizza I keep hearing about? Afterwords, we all rolled to pilosoft and had a little to drink. dho kicked everyone's ass at foosball. Is that how that's spelled? dho had to go home, so he gave me his beanie and left. Wee! New coder gear. We stopped by the village briefly. I got some cheapie sunglasses that make me look like a hella dork. There's a pic somewhere of me wearing the beanie with the sunglasses. I look horrible. I'll post it later.

asr and I made it back to his place relatively early - 11 PM or so. Since my flight was due to leave at 5 AM, I tried to get in a few hours of sleep. If I had known I was going to miss my flight by 5 friggin minutes, I would have slept in more.

Highlight of the evening: seisan stopped to pick up some shoes for me since my heels were killing me and we wanted to walk around. fearnor, poxy, and her were in one car, and asr, dho, and I were in the other. We were talking on the phone trying to meet up, and the cars pulled up right next to each other at the light. It took us a second to realize this, but we rolled our windows down, and seisan made the shoes handoff through the open windows right as the light turned green. That was some seriously shady looking shit. Best shoe handoff ever.

I've been "sponsored" to go to NYCBSDCon, so I'll be seeing y'all there this weekend.

Well, my plane tickets were "sponsored". I've still got to pay to get in. Lame. ;)

I'm back for the weekend. It feels strange. This isn't my city anymore.

The Big News

I have accepted a job at Yahoo! in their California office. I'll be moving to the bay area. My start date is November 13th. I'll miss Austin. I met a lot of cool people here, and I honestly love this city very much. I'll be back to visit all of you, I promise.

I hate surprises.

I've got big news coming up, but I don't want to mention it here until all the papers are signed. So in lack of better content, here's a funny email.

Backstory: Keith and I went to the Alamo Drafthouse to watch Fearless a week ago. After it got out, we were going to stop by a friends house, but he wouldn't answer his door. His car was in the driveway, so we were pretty sure he was just being lame. He lived in an apartment complex, and there were a bunch of rocks near his door, so I made an arrow out of rocks, and Keith spelled out the word LOSER. I guess it was only funny if you were there. Here is the email thread that ensued.

From: Michael Pappageorge
To: Keith O'Connell, Patrick O'Connell
Subject: Foreskin Breath!

Which one of you dildos made a mosaic in front of my door last night?! I'm guessing Keith, since he makes it down south more than Pat. I know you're still pissed about my no show for your birthday, but that's ridiculous! Apparently, you also pissed off all my neighbors. Be looking for your birthday present in front of your door. It will be in a brown paper bag and it will also be on fire! Make sure you stomp it out before opening. By the way, I had a birthday last year and there was no party and nobody even bothered to call and say "Happy Birthday". You don't see me crying. At least you had some rough sex on your birthday!! Say "Hi" to "Madam Crush Nuts" for me.

Yours Truly.

Note: I believe I am the "Madam Crush Nuts" referred to in the note. I'm not sure why I have been given this nickname.

Holy Crap . . . There really is a whiney little girl under all that hair!!

Save all your pathetic whining for someone who gives two sh*ts about both
your neighbor and your "my life sucks" pity party stories. You are the
biggest baby I know . . . even Izzy has a better grip.

p.s. I ordered in pizza last night . . . Glad to be included in on your rant
though.

Someone call the WAAAAAAAAmbulance. Look chief, I stopped by there at 9pm, knocked on your door, called your phone, no answer. If you were SLEEPING at that hour, then you really are pathetic ;). Would have been a quick little visit, just to say hi. No answer at the door, so i figured i'd leave you a little message ;).

cheers,

k

Just so y'all know, I told Keith I was going to post these emails, and he was ok with it. So unless I get an ok from the sender, I don't post private stuff. This thread was probably only interesting if you knew the players involved.

It's working, after a bit of playing with.

1. Download the iSync Plugin from Mactomster.

2. Copy mactomster.phoneplugin to the /Applications/iSync.app/Contents/Plugins/ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice/Contents/Plugins directory.

3. Open up the MetaClasses.plist file inside mactomster.phoneplugin/Contents/Resources with the Property List Editor.

4. Scroll down to the entry for com.nokia.E61 and copy (or rename) it to com.nokia.E62. A few small changes need to be made for this to work with the E62.

Identification.com.apple.cgmi+cgmm: Nokia+Nokia E62
Services.0.ServiceProperties.ModelName: E62

6. Open the Bluetooth Preferences Pane in Systems Preferences.

7. Go through the process of setting up a new device. If you need help with this, look in my blog archives for the entry on setting up a Motorola V600 with T-Mobile.

8. Start iSync, go to Devices > Add New Device.

9. Select the E62.

10. Sync

New Cell Phone

I picked up a Nokia E62 today, after being surprised by the small deposit required by Cingular. I had bad credit a few years ago, so when I tried to get a Cingular phone back then, they asked me for an $800 deposit. It was a pleasant surprise not having to front all that money.

My first impressions of the phone are positive. It's a little bulky - definitely not a "girly" phone like the Moto RAZR v3 that I used to have. Symbian OS has gone through a lot of changes since the last time I used it (Nokia 3650). It's a little difficult to find my way around. I actually had to pull out the manual for a few things. It has VPN & SIP support, both of which are hella cool to have although I doubt I'll ever use them. It lacks a camera, but I never really used the camera on my old phone anyways.

I downloaded PuTTY and Google Maps after the data service was finally enabled. Cingular takes a while to get the ball rolling. My old number still hasn't rolled over, although I can place outgoing calls. I'm not too happy with Cingular's plans, but well, I downloaded PuTTY quickly enough to make me giggle.

iSync doesn't currently support the E62, but I've found a few plugins for the E61 online that I'm trying to get working. I'll post with notes if I have any success doing so.

I think I'm going to buy a cell phone today. I got some good news, so might as well throw away this CricKet piece of trash Kyocera. I originally intended to get the Sidekick 3 from TMobile, but I think I need to reevaluate my options.

I'm not up on the latest cell phone trends, so here's my requirements:

  • Bluetooth
  • QWERTY keyboard
  • Carrier that has inexpensive data plans
  • Non-sucky Email client
  • SSH client (I don't mind paying an extra fee to download this. It just needs to be available.)

There's a few other things I'd like, but these aren't deal breakers:

  • mp3 ringtones
  • Some sort of removable storage, like SD or CF
  • Quad-band

As far as carriers go, I'm only looking at TMobile and Cingular. TMobile tends to have better rates on data plans, but Cingular's network is far superior. I know we've all had nightmares with one cell phone company or another, and I've had to deal with both of these, so I hate them both equally.

QDB Link: Vote!

<randi> did you kill this perl coder?
<sbahra> randi, I've gotten into many arguments with him. :-)
<sbahra> He's far too much of a celebrity in this scene to really "win". He did write *a lot* of code. :-)
<sbahra> Not necessarily good code, but a lot of code.
<randi> you know, sucking a lot of dick doesn't make you a porn star. it just makes you a slut.

The problem: You've got a 2TB external RAID array. You want to be able to use said array in Windows XP, Linux, FreeBSD, and MacOSX. What filesystem do you use?

NTFS was one of my first thoughts, but write support under Linux is...bad. It's probably pretty bad in FreeBSD as well. MacOSX only has read support.

Next up? FAT32. To the best of my knowledge, FAT32 has drive size limitations. I don't think it'll be easily readable by Windows. I'm also not sure how permissions work on that. I don't think that they do. I don't screw around with Windows-based filesystems that much. However, it is supported in Linux, FreeBSD, and MacOSX.

Insert joke about ReiserFS here.

UFS/UFS2: Supported in Linux. UFS is supported in MacOSX as well (I think), but I don't think UFS2 is. I've found a few third party browser utilities for Windows, but none that I would trust.

ext2/ext3: Supported in MacOSX, thoughonly ext2 via a third party. I've read that ext3 partitions can be mounted as ext2, they just lose their journaling abilities. Third party support is also available for Windows, but I'm not sure how great it is. Supported in FreeBSD. Obviously supported in Linux.

So, any recommendations?

I eat gnomes.

I pre-ordered World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade Expansion Pack from Gamestop a few weeks ago. I've never bothered pre-ordering anything before. I'm sorta excited, but I know it'll be totally anticlimactic when I finally get it. I also need to work on remembering what Gamestop I ordered it from. This could be a problem.

Keith's birthday was Sunday; he turned 30. Hella old. We celebrated in the usual style - an excess of alcohol. I drank half of a 1.75ltr bottle of vodka. If you knew my tolerance, you'd understand how impressive that was. I woke up the next morning feeling more rested than I've felt in quite a while. Very odd.

Random: California was nice. I have hives on my right wrist. I need more sleep, still.

Elad sells out.

Not really. I'm actually pretty happy for him. He wrote a paper detailing Recent Security Enhancements in NetBSD and it got published on SecurityFocus.

I'm sorry I'm not going to make it to EuroBSDCon, babe. I just don't think I can afford the tickets. I will see you at the next one, though. I promise, fo realz.

I'll still be at NYCBSDCon though, and I may be bringing Keith along. Don't be too hard on him, guys.

Update: I fixed the link for EuroBSDCon. Seriously, guys, who the hell puts www in front of domain names anymore? Fix yer DNS.

Firefox 2 RC 1

Firefox 2 RC 1 has been available for download for a few days now. It's added in some pretty neat features in the base browser that third party plugins had to manage before, such as restoring sessions if the browser is to crash. This is a really awesome k-rad elite feature, and let me tell you, you'll be using it a lot.

Hours spent actively using Firefox 2 RC 1 in MacOSX: 16
Number of times Firefox 2 RC 1 has locked up: 83

I have to Force Quit firefox.app and then restart it, and this handy little box pops up asking me if I want to restore my session. I hit the button, and there's about a 30% chance that it's going to lock up again before the browser window even spawns.

At least I can continue browsing Questionable Content from the same point after each crash without losing my place.

Good job on that QA there. If you're going to label something as a Release Candidate, please make it last more than 10 minutes without crashing. It's not even like I was loading complex pages. Oh noes, an IMG tag! *lock*

I'll be in San Francisco soon, just for a day or so. I may only have a few spare hours, but if anyone wants to meet up for a drink (or well, pick me up from the airport. That'd be hella cool too), shoot me an email.
