Oh, but tell them how I really feel, eh?
I am not pleased, not one bit. I was hoping for something revolutionary, but instead we're stuck with another sexist homophobe. I'm looking at possibly converting to catholism, so this irritates me more than it normally would. It's not like I desire to be a female priest, or that I'm gay and want to be accepted by the church. I just think it's wrong. The catholic church needs to catch up with the modern times which within we live. Do you think this pope is going to condone the use of birth control? Hah! As if. Down with women, up with apathy of sexuality!
Fuck the pope.
- Edit -
After writing this, there was some talk in #freebsddrama/EFNet:
[12:32] <sektie> lets see how much hate mail i get for that one.
[12:33] <sei> who cares what catholics think
[12:34] <seinfeld> what's that?
[12:43] <sektie> well, i'm going to be a catholic.
[12:43] <sektie> i want to get married as a catholic to mike. his family is catholic.
[12:43] <sektie> god is god, i guess. religion is just the shady guy that comes to your house at 3 am to drop off the 8ball.

"...religion is just the shady guy that comes to your house at 3 am to drop off the 8ball."
ahahahaahah. ++
How can you talk about the Pope and revolution at the same time? The
church is a religious institution, and as such, will always stand for
conservative believes. If you want modern, leave the church.
It always baffles me how people stick with the church but ask
for a change. How can you expect a change from a foundation that
has made a reputation for itself as sticking to the same 2000 year
old stigmas regardless of the world around it?
It seems to me that you dont REALLY want to change. You dont REALLY
care for your personal freedom and dont REALLY want to make decisions on your own.
You're just scared.
Gilad.
This totally reminds me of this conversation we just had in #freebsdhelp about the OSI model.
It was great, in theory. It gave a good basis. The internet evolved however, and it did not. Some people are thickheaded enough to stick by it, saying it's set in stone. Others say it's a load of bullshit, and while it might be good for noobs, it's nothing the seasoned network veteran would use.
It's not that I'm trying to change the subject, but it is an apt metaphor. Do you think the OSI model should change to reflect the changes in the internet? So many protocols span different layers. You can really argue just about anything when it comes to where something fits. Does it change to be 'with the times', or does it stay so obsolete that most of us end up ignoring it?
The church is faced with the same decision. Change with the times, or have more and more people just...ignore it.
I dont think we can continue having this conversation, simply
because you believe that:
a. the pope is a messenger of god
b. there is a god
and I dont.
I could start talking about your metaphor, try different ways to contradict
it, laws of man vs. laws of god, etc...
But there's not much point.
... Sorry ;)
I don't necessarily believe there's a god. What gave you that idea? :)
Lots of people that claim to be of one religion or another don't actually believe in god. It's just what they say, because it's expected. Maybe because they don't want to defend themselves if they say otherwise. The majority of the population claims to believe in god, but how many do you think really, truely do? Would people behave the way they did if they actually believed in the omnipotent God the bible tells us about?
I just like to argue.
Here's my take (being an Italian Roman-Catholic-now-Buddhist/Gnostic):
The Catholic Church needs to get a fucking clue. Birth control is not about some blonde Paris-Hilton-clone in Beverly Hills deciding that she doesn't wanna get pregnant from the boytoy flavor-of-the-week that she is dating. It is about dealing with a population explosion in places like Africa and Central America, where the people are too fucking poor and ignorant to know that they don't need to be screwing like jackrabbits on speed and producing even more children that are going to either die of starvation, die of AIDS, or die from joining yet another meaningless guerrila fight for whatever warlord is in power.
AIDS is a huge problem in Africa right now. The population is not only out of control, but AIDS is surpassing starvation as the leading killer in Africa. People are dying by the millions. But because the Catholic Church is so fucking ignorant and want to stick to the doctrine that birth control is a sin (even between married people, incidentally), then the people will keep doing whatever they want to because poor or not, they don't want to end up in Hell.
Birth control like a condom prevents the spread of sexually-transmitted diseases-- like AIDS, for instance. Telling people to not use it is basically being out of touch with people. They will continue to screw around, make an ungodly amount of children, keep adding to the mass starvation and AIDS crisis, and nothing gets done.
I won't even get into the other problems that this Pope has-- like being author of a paper that basically tells sexually-abused kids that they have to take an oath of secrecy before bringing up charges against a priest. The real disappointment is not only in this guy, but that the cardinals think that this guy is the best guy for the job and that the Church actually needs to be even MORE conservative. That these problems don't need to be addressed. That it's ok for a priest that had to quit the archdiocese in Boston due to sexual abuse allegations to celebrate the mass for John Paul II's funeral. That birth control is evil even if it means that the spread of a deadly disease is not stemmed.
It's not the 1600s, nor the 1800s nor even the 1900s. It's time for the Catholic Church to step into the 21st century a bit and appointing this guy was simply the wrong direction and it shows a church that has a leadership that is afraid of a new direction. Their idea of being close to people is to stick to old doctrine and dogma and demand that people come closer to them, when in fact it should be the other way around.
Anyway.. that is all.
You should rant on my blog more often. You're highly entertaining.
I'm not entertaining.. I'm just lucid. Or something.
lupins?

What is it about birth control that you like so much?
Haven't you ever heard of "Natural Family Planning"?
There are two effective methods that allow you to be totally free of artificial hormonal birth control which can cause serious side effects. The Billings Ovulation Method and the Sympto-Thermal Method allow pregnancy to be avoided or achieved with 98-99% effectiveness.
